Costa Calida Beaches

Sunshine and surf

Costa Calida enjoys a diverse coastline extending over 250 kilometres in total. Amongst this lengthy stretch are some great beaches to be found.

From popular, urban beaches where the cherenguitos serve up sardines and cold beer all day, to the more sedate and picturesque beaches, located away from the hurly burly of modern life. All the public beaches in Calida are regularly cleaned by council service staff and the more popular ones enjoy lifeguard protection in the summer months. Add to this the fantastic climate which sees 320 days of sunshine each year and you can relax and slap on the UV protection.

Many beaches also cater for the more active beach bum, with activities such as diving, water skiing, wind-surfing and even parascending common nearer the larger urban centres. The beaches observe the European flag system relating both to cleanliness and safety on any given day. You are advised to take note of the red flags (only usually seen in the winter months) if you are intending to throw on your wetsuit and get stuck in!

Beaches In Costa Calida

  • La Carolina Beach is a wide, extensive strip of beach located near Arejos (Aguilas) on the main road, the A332. The beach enjoys good access and plenty of parking space. It is not overburdened with beach bars and restaurants, but does enjoy the benefits of the local council cleaning services as well as fully trained lifeguards throughout the summer months. This is a tranquil beach, ideal for those who want to "get away from it all", rather than those looking for a daytime party. The waters here are very clear and are home to a colony of beautiful Posidonia.
  • San Gines Beach - situated near Cartagena, around 45 minutes drive from Murcia, San Gines is an urbanised beach and enjoys some great facilities, such as bars and restaurants, as well as bathrooms, showers and attending lifeguards. The postion of the beach along with its number of cherenguitos means that it can be popular and occasionally crowded (particulalrly in August). In addition the beach is just near a main bus route, giving easy access to those without a car. The beach also has a diving centre. This beach is popular with the younger crowd, making this an often lively place to spend the day.
  • Negrete Beach is for those who love remote, windswept spaces where they can contemplate, rather than socialise. It is driving distance from Cartagena, and although well known locally, it is rarely crowded, even in July and August. There are few facilities here, so don't come expecting a Macdonalds! It is a very clean beach with crystal clear waters, and is part of the local national park and therefore protected from development. It even has a secret smugglers cave towards one end of the beach!
  • Cabezo del Mojon Beach is partly urbanised, as it lies along the outer suburbs of Cabeza del Mojon, and enjoys a wonderful almost Caribbean aspect, given the wide, light beaches and wide open sea vistas. Although it can be popular it never gets too busy, even though its sits conveniently just off the E22 road and the local bus route. The beach has nearby camping facilities and is sometimes popular with scuba divers.
