COSTA DEL SOL expats have long cherished the opportunity to stock up on British staples such as Marmite, cheddar, Hobnobs and bacon at the Safeway superstore in Gibraltar, but it is now set to close.
Morrisons, which bought Safeway last year, has confirmed that, in line with its “strategy of focusing business in the UK”, the store will be “marketed in the near future”. The move follows the sale of Safeway stores in the Channel Islands. Rumours on the Rock suggest that property developers are already in talks with Morrisons to buy the building and build a luxury residential complex.
Main Street in the Crown Colony remains host to Bhs, Dorothy Perkins, the Body Shop and the last remaining branch of Marks & Spencer in continental Europe.
